Whether you are teaching ICD-9 or ICD-10,
Elsevier’s got you covered.

Q: When should our school start offering ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS training?

A: While professional coders do not need to start using ICD-10 until the compliance date, it is a good idea to start familiarizing students with ICD-10 now, while they are learning ICD-9. Elsevier began Dual Coding key coding textbooks in 2009. This means that when students learn how to find ICD-9 codes in their textbooks, they can also practice locating the information in draft ICD-10 manuals as they learn.

Q: Does the implementation of ICD-10-CM affect any other courses in the coding curriculum?

A: ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS will require more advanced knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy and physiology, so it is important to assess the content of these courses.

Q: When will my Elsevier texts transition to ICD-10?

A: Since 2009, all Elsevier coding products have been revised to address the ICD-9 to ICD-10 transition. Products will address both code sets until the implementation date.

Q: Will certified coders have to recertify?

A: AHIMA is currently offering multiple training options for ICD-10, please visit http://www.ahima.org/ICD10/default.aspx for more details. AAPC offers a training plan that culminates with an ICD-10 Assessment Exam, please visit http://www.aapc.com/icd-10/index.aspx for more details.
